DAC® is a gel composed of two bio-absorbable polymers: hyaluronic acid and polylactic acid. It is produced in the form of a powder which, must be hydrated with water for injectable preparations alone or in solution with an antibiotic to obtain the hydrogel formulation.
The indication is the prevention of peri-prosthetic infections. This prevention is achieved by covering the implant components or internal fixation devices with DAC® hydrogel directly in the operating room before implant insertion, in order to create a temporary protective barrier against bacterial adhesion.
The application of the DAC® interrupts the ability of pathogens to bind to the implant surface, inhibiting the initial stages of bacterial colonization that would lead to the biofilm formation. The DAC® forms a hydrogel that acts as a temporary barrier, providing an effective mechanism for the prevention of bacterial infections.
